Next year will be YDEKC’s 10 year anniversary from our very first Executive Leaders Summit, before we became a staffed coalition and cross-sector convener. At this turning of the decade, we are exploring what our next decade can look like. Please watch for a survey for members and our other partners in early 2020 to help us finalize our strategic direction for the next phase of our work. We are in a period of massive change in our field, in our region, and in our country; looking back to our youth development roots in order to look forward feels exactly right.

What’s Your Elevator Pitch? How Do You Talk About Your Program and to Whom?
In our latest blog post highlighting Partnership Toolkit resources, Anne Arias describes the art of the elevator pitch. This brief pitch is the go-to script that one might use to describe their work or organization. Should this script change depending on who is listening? Anne shares some reflective questions to help tailor a pitch to better influence the intended audience.

Reflecting on a Busy Year!
In case you missed our Whole Child, Whole Day newsletter earlier this month, here’s a recap of our busy year in the Social Emotional Learning space. In February, we co-hosted a cross-sector conversation with Dr. Shawn Ginwright. In the spring, we implemented YDEKC’s first Whole Child, Whole Day mini-grant initiative and were able to invest $123K in 16 projects that support the whole child. We also launched our third School-Community Partnership Cohort, adding a focus on SEL, with a group of 15 youth-serving organizations. The year 2019 also included our biggest SEL Symposium to date, with close to 350 participants, 23 workshop sessions, and an addition of drop-in options that introduced nature play, a mindfulness corner, and a story booth. We also launched our first social media campaign (#wholechildwholeday and #selkc). It’s been a busy and inspiring year! We look forward to 2020 with more opportunities to learn, align, and collaborate in support of the whole child across the whole day. We are grateful to our Whole Child, Whole Day Advisory Committee, a group of cross-sector leaders volunteering their time to help shape our work in the region.

Advocacy Day for Youth Development

Join YDEKC staff and advocates from expanded learning, mentoring, and youth-serving organizations for Advocacy Day in Olympia! Have your voice heard by legislators on the importance of youth development programming such as expanded learning, mentoring, and case management. Advocacy training, materials, lunch, and a continental breakfast will be provided. Youth are encouraged to attend! Register here (and please note the location change)!

State Announces Changes to Overtime Rules
The State of Washington Department of Labor & Industries released its new rules regarding which employees earn overtime pay. Washington Nonprofits will offer a free webinar about the overtime rules early in 2020, but for now you can click here to learn more.

Nonprofit “.org” Domains Face Significant Price Increases
Earlier this week, Washington Nonprofits shared an Action Alert related to nonprofit websites. This link explains that price caps were recently removed from .org domains and a private company now owns them all, meaning that very soon this private company may start charging a lot more to folks with .org domains to renew. Washington Nonprofits’s newsletter recommends renewing now for the next 10 years to avoid major fees.

The City of Seattle Human Services Department has released their 2020 NOFA. Read the notice for more information on HSD’s investments and resources for potential applicants — and get your Request for Proposal ready for March 2020.

King County’s Youth & Amateur Sports Grants
Mark your calendars! On January 6, 2020 King County Parks Youth Sports Grant Team will begin accepting applications for both capital projects and programs serving priority youth. Their website will display the link to their online grant portal on January 6. Until then, please read their brochure for additional information on their grants.

YDEKC Advisory Board Members
Brianna Jackson, one of our long term Advisory Board members and past co-chair is wrapping up her 20 year tenure at Launch in January. Jennifer Tanaka, our last board chair moved on from OneWorld Now! earlier in the fall and has landed at King County as Deputy Division Director for Children, Youth and Young Adults! We will also miss Kate Tibone who is moving on from Powerful Voices at the end of the month. Deep gratitude to these three outstanding women for their leadership and strategic vision! We look forward to continuing to partner in your new roles. We also send thanks to Louis Garcia, a YDEKC Advocacy Committee member, who has just left Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Puget Sound, but will stay in the organization at the national headquarters in Florida. Most of these organizations are looking for their next leader — is it you?
