Greetings YDEKC Members and Friends –
This shortest of months also seems to be one of the busiest with the state legislature in full swing, budget processes beginning at all jurisdictions, and glimpses through the snow of spring and summer beyond. In our Field Notes this month you’ll see many signs of “spring” – progress towards making our partnerships stronger, our programs and classrooms more empathetic, supportive and engaging of all students and our public policy better for kids and families. We are gearing up for our annual Member Summit for Executive Leaders of youth serving non-profits on March 21st, and also kicking off several new projects that you’ll learn about as you read on!
Use the hyperlinks below to jump to another section of our Field Notes.
In service and gratitude,
Jessica

Aspen Institute National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development: Survey & Interim Report
The Aspen Institute National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development, which was launched to “advance a new vision for what constitutes success for our schools and our students,” seeks your input in the process of preparing recommendations for the fall. The Commission recently released their Interim Report to share what they have learned so far, including key points such as (a) learning is social and emotional, (b) the interconnectedness of social, emotional, and academic development must be reflected in all aspects of schooling, (c) educators’ social and emotional competence is crucial to this work, and (d) local communities need to shape and drive the process of comprehensively supporting students. |

Advocacy: We advocate for policy changes that address youth development field needs and issues impacting King County youth.
Washington State Legislature
We continue to watch and sign-in on many bills that will have positive outcomes for kids. House and Senate Budgets came out this week, so much more analysis to be done, but early good news that the Expanded Learning Opportunities Initiative is in the House budget at $750K (flat funded). As always, Laurie Lippold’s weekly round up from Partners for our Children is a go-to during session to get a glimpse into what’s happening in Olympia.
Best Starts for Kids 2017 in Review
From Sheila Capestany, Strategic Advisor for Children and Youth: “As I write to you, Best Starts for Kids implementation is in full swing, and we are making excellent progress toward our shared vision for King County children, young people, and families. Our accomplishments this year speak to the hard work of our partners and communities to put every baby born and every child raised in King County on a path to health, well-being, and lifelong success.” Read on here for more of Sheila’s letter and Best Start’s first annual year in review report to the community.

All recommenders must be SHSC members and recommendations must articulate how they will Build Well-being in Communities throughout Seattle.
