Greetings YDEKC Members & Friends!

For the next several months, I will be sharing quotes from our Advocacy Committee about their beliefs around advocacy. I thank our new co-chairs Erica Mullen and James Miles! I offer my deep appreciation to the Advocacy Committee for giving their time and energy to our collective impact.

Washington State Activity

Youth Development Work Group
The conversation continues!   Schools Out Washington and YDEKC are building on the momentum achieved from the bill regarding the Youth Development Work Group last legislative session.  We have had meetings with members of the Department of Children, Youth, and Family; OSPI; the Governor’s Office; and provider stake holders.  Our goal is to move forward with this conversation, creating a template for future legislation.

Washington Expanded Learning Opportunities Network
YDEKC is a member of the Washington Expanded Learning Opportunities Network. Our guiding principle is “Young people’s education doesn’t stop when the school day ends; neither should their access to high-quality learning opportunities. Quality expanded learning opportunities build lifelong skills, improve academic performance, and inspire young people to discover their individual passions. When expanded learning is supported to complement the school day, our state can narrow the opportunity gap and develop tomorrow’s leaders.” Learn more and join the Network here!

King County Activity

Puget Sound Taxpayer’s Accountability Account Update (PSTAA)
YDEKC hosted another Lunching with Leaders on June 27th with King County Council Member Claudia Balducci and had a productive dialogue regarding the interests of the 5-Young Adult sector, the work before the council, and the wish from our members that the focus remain on the named populations of foster, homeless and vulnerable youth. We have had several staff and members testify, meet with council members directly, and attend the hearings regarding these funds.  The last work session regarding PSTAA was July 1st with a plan for a new proposal and vote on July 15th.  YDEKC will continue to engage as advocates for our sector. Stay tuned!

YDEKC Policy & Communications Coordinator Hikma Sherka testifies at the July 1st meeting of the
